Dozens injured in East Jerusalem clashes

Some of the new clashes resulted from protests Friday of a ban on entering the mosque for Muslim men under age 50.

Israeli forces attacked Palestinians on Friday while they were performing their Friday prayers at the Israeli military Qalandia checkpoint located between Ramallah and Jerusalem.

Thousands of Palestinians have marched towards Al-Aqsa in protest at the installation of the metal detectors, with Israeli forces using rubber bullets against some of the most violent demonstrators.

Thousands of Muslims earlier prayed in the streets near the contested shrine, known to Muslims as the Noble Sanctuary and to Jews as the Temple Mount.

Late Thursday night, the Israeli Security Cabinet decided that the controversial metal detectors at the entrance to the Temple Mount would be kept in place.

Conflicts over the holy site, home to the Al Aqsa mosque and Dome of the Rock which are revered by Muslims, have repeatedly triggered Israeli-Palestinian confrontations over the years.

'The Israeli offer to keep the metal detectors in place, but only require suspicious individuals to pass through them, was unreservedly rejected by the Palestinians, ' he said. The ambassador said that "the Israeli extremist government makes to make the situation explode, above all to hinder USA attempts to restart dialogue for the two-state solution". "Al Aqsa mosque is ours and just for us", he added.

Nickolay Mladenov, the United Nations special coordinator for Israeli-Palestinian peace talks, called for calm.

Local sources told Al-Araby Al-Jadeed that the occupation forces brought in more metal barriers and spread them across the Old City and near Al-Aqsa Mosque's gates in order to prevent demonstrations in support of Al-Aqsa.

Three Arab gunmen launched an attack from there last week, killing two Israeli policemen.

The security measures have also sparked anger in Jordan, which is the official custodian of the Muslim holy sites in Jerusalem.

The Islamic Hamas movement and other Palestinian factions and political powers called Friday "a day of rage in support for the mosque".

Abu Rdeneh says Abbas told Kushner that the situation is "extremely unsafe and may go out of control" unless Israel removes the metal detectors.

A second person, who was reportedly shot in the A-Tur area of East Jerusalem, died of his injuries at Makassed Hospital.

Muslim religious authorities, who say the metal detectors violate a delicate agreement on worship and security arrangements at the site, have been urging Palestinians not to pass through, and prayers have been held near an entrance to the complex.
