Chargers acquire quarterback Cardale Jones from Buffalo

Jones, who joined the Bills previous year as a fourth-round choice from Ohio State, seemingly was a long-shot to make the Buffalo roster.

Jones, who led Ohio State to the 2014 national championship, becomes the fifth quarterback on the Chargers roster, joining starter Philip Rivers, Kellen Clemens, Mike Bercovici and Eli Jenkins.

The Bills announced on Twitter they traded Jones to the Chargers in exchange for a conditional draft pick.

With their first practice of training camp less than 24 hours away, the Buffalo Bills shook up their quarterback depth chart by trading Cardale Jones to the Los Angeles Chargers for a conditional draft pick.

The trade comes after the Chargers worked out free agent Robert Griffin III on Tuesday, according to multiple reports.

The deal reconnects Jones with his former offensive coordinator in Buffalo, now Chargers head coach Anthony Lynn.

Jones received only limited reps with the Bills offense during organized team activities and minicamp this spring. "He's the type of quarterback you want waiting on the runway".

"Cardale is a good, young talent, and he's going to add competition behind Philip Rivers", Lynn told the Chargers' website.

The Buffalo Bills chose to part ways with Jones for what was originally reported as a "late" conditional pick according to NFL Media's Ian Rapoport, who was the first to report on the transaction Wednesday. "He's accurate. I think his development has come along fine". He appeared in just one game last season for Buffalo, completing 6-of-11 passes for 96 yards with no touchdowns.
