Trump reportedly dictated misleading statement about son's meeting with Russian lawyer

NBC's White House team, on what really happened to Anthony Scaramucci: "Two sources close to President Donald Trump said Scaramucci's profane remarks last week to The New Yorker magazine "disgusted" and "offended" some close to the president, including Melania Trump, and - crucially - Ivanka Trump, who had initially advocated for Scaramucci's hiring..."

But "it soon became clear that it had no interesting information", and that its real objective was to discuss the adoption of Russian children by american couples within the framework of a program suspended by the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, had said the eldest son of Mr. Trump.

As more details about the meeting emerged in subsequent reports, the younger Trump eventually released emails showing that he accepted the meeting after receiving an offer of compromising information on his father's opponent, Hillary Clinton.

Although misleading the public or the news media is not a crime, advisers to Trump and his family told The Washington Post that they fear any indication that Trump was seeking to hide information about contacts between his campaign and Russians nearly inevitably would draw additional scrutiny from Mueller.

Their initial inaccurate response proved to be incredibly damaging as the full, accurate details about the meeting and its participants trickled out. The statement, which ran in the New York Times, stressed that the meeting was "not a campaign issue at the time", the Post notes.

In defending his son, Trump said: "I think from a practical standpoint most people would have taken that meeting..." The new report revealed Trump "personally dictated" the contents of that statement.

The Washington Post's Philip Rucker and Carol D. Leonnig explain. Drafting a statement, he said, is "a communal situation that involved communications people and various lawyers". He dictated the statement, which was given to the New York Times on July 8, while aboard Air Force One.

Before Sanders' comments White House officials had declined to say if they had a response to multiple police departments criticizing Trump's law-and-order speech in NY. "Now someone can claim [Trump]'s the one who attempted to mislead", the adviser said.

"Not surprisingly, (Trump's) comments have been completely taken out of context by the racially exclusive and divisive profiteers seeking to call into question his support of all law abiding citizens and the law enforcement that live and work among them", he said. Trump Jr. invited his brother-in-law, Jared Kushner, and campaign chairman Paul Manafort. The fact that Trump assumed that he could engineer this mini-coverup and the truth would never get out, both about the meeting itself and about his role in misleading the public about it, shows just how deluded he is about how his own White House works.
