Palace sees nothing 'objectionable' with U.S. destroyer in South China Sea

A U.S. Navy destroyer challenged China's territorial claim on trade routes in the South China Sea on Thursday when the vessel came within 12 nautical miles of an artificial island China built in the area.

The officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the USS John S. McCain traveled close to Mischief Reef in the Spratly Islands, among a string of islets, reefs and shoals.

Geng said the Chinese navy "identified the USA warship, warned and expelled it".

The operation occurred at an awkward and tense moment in the region, amid the war of words between the United States and North Korea.

An analysis by Washington's Centre for Strategic and International Studies found the volume of global shipping transiting through the South China Sea was less than previously thought, and put the real figure at $US3.3 trillion ($4.2 trillion).

The so-called "freedom of navigation" mission involved the Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer sailing within the 12-mile range of an artificial island reclaimed by China.

It was the third "freedom of navigation operation" or "fonop" conducted during Trump's presidency.

"Its behaviour has violated the Chinese law and relevant worldwide law, infringed upon China's sovereignty, disrupted peace, security and order of the relevant waters and put in jeopardy the facilities and personnel on the Chinese islands, and thus constitutes a serious political and military provocation". The Department of Foreign Affairs did not comment further on the issue.

Pole detained over abduction of British model in Italy
Police found a small bedroom at the property, but it is unclear whether it was used by the model or the kidnapper. A British model was abducted in Milan and put up for auction online after being lured to a sham photoshoot.

Geng said, "China has the firm determination to safeguard its territorial sovereignty and maritime interests".

The U.S. "freedom of navigation" operation has been previously conducted near China's reclaimed islands, called the Spratlys, or Nansha Islands, claimed also by the Philippines, Vietnam and Taiwan, among others.

The US has criticized China's construction of islands and build-up of military facilities in the disputed territories and was concerned it could be used to restrict free nautical movement.

But China scoffed at the USA, calling the move a "provocation" that could seriously damage the two countries' strategic trust and also create difficulties and obstacles for their defence forces, Reuters reported. "The operations are conducted in accordance with worldwide law", she said.

The US does not recognise China's claims to the area.

A leading U.S. think tank, meanwhile, released a new report documenting what it said was continuing reclamation work on Chinese-controlled islands in the area despite a recent claim by China's foreign minister that such work had stopped two years ago.

The Joint Communiqué reflects the consensus of the ministers on issues concerning ASEAN, wherein Vietnam and the Philippines are member states.
